Turangi is a small town of 3600 people and Gateway to the Tongariro National Park and Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The town is set on the banks of the Tongariro River with access to theTongariro River Trails an exciting range of outdoor activities, stunning alpine walks and world class trout & fly fishing.

For a small town Turangi offers a surprisingly diverse range of food and eating out choices and an adequate range of other local services. The history and culture of Turangi is based around early Maori settlement, trout fishing and the Tongariro Power Development.

Toward Tongariro National Park

Alpine & Native Bush Walks Riverstone Recommendation

Its 30 minutes drive to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, 45 minutes to the Whakapapa Walks at Whakapapa Village and a further 10 minutes to the Whakapapa Ski Field. Heading into the National Park via SH47 there is a great native bush walk at Lake Rotoponamu (1hr) which could be combined with the shorter Te Porere Redoubt walk. There are also some interesting alternative mountain biking and walking options off SH1 south of Turangi in the Kaimanawa Forest Park.
