Day Walks & Multi Day Treks

T he entire Tongariro Region and the Tongariro National Park are a walking and trekking paradise, with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing the best known day walk. There are also many options  in and around Turangi in Tokaanu & the Western Bays, the Kaimanawa Forest Park and close to Taupo township. Some trails are shared with Mountain bikers and in some cases fishermen.

Tongariro National Park

The Tongariro Crossing is the jewel of the National Park, which many consider our country’s best one day walk. Other multi-day treks within the Tongariro National Park, are the 3 day Tongariro Northern Circuit, and the Tongariro Traverse & Mt Ruapehu – a lower altitude day walk through the heart of the park featuring vistas from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies. There are a range of stunning shorter alpine walks walks from the Whakapapa Village (45 minutes drive).

Turangi & Surrounds

There are relatively easy yet spectacular walks close to town including the Tongariro River Trail, the area toward Tokaanu, Pukawa & Waihaha (SH41), and south of Turangi in the Kaimanawa Forest Park  and Tree Trunk Gorge area (SH1). Lake Rotopounamu & Te Porere Redoubt (SH47,10 & 30 minutes drive) can also be included in a day trip with one of the walks from Whakapapa Village (45 minutes drive).

Taupo, Western Bays & Around the Mountain

If you are seeking a longer day trip or are traveling to or from the region make sure you check out some of the options available around the mountain, in Taupo township by the Waikato River, between Taupo and Turangi or perhaps the Waihaha track in the western bays (SH41).
